Burr's heartfelt lyrics, twang-infused folk sensibilities, and somber melodies immediately won him a place in the hearts of those who enjoy Johnny Cash, Dylan, and Wilco.

While not touted as the official follow-up to On Promenade, The Shawl is a project consisting of 9 songs with lyrics lifted from the book of Psalms. Doug Burr is unafraid to push the envelope when it comes to the delicate mix of religion, music, and art. He proves it here by crafting a powerful collection of songs that marries his "grass-roots" musical style to the honesty and transparency of the Psalms. It's a perfect marriage.

Doug's vocals are the most striking aspect of the songs; they are brimming with emotion and purpose, commanding your attention. Musically, this project is noticeably more mellow and low-key as if the focus was intended to be more on the message and not the tune. The arrangements are simply consisting of sparse guitar strumming, very intermittent percussion, and perhaps a sound effect here and there. The words and voice are absolutely the driving force behind The Shawl and I'm sure that's not by accident.

The songs were recorded in Tehuacana, TX in the Texas Hall, built in 1860’s, and is in pretty bad condition but still standing. I'm guessing we get a glimpse of its interior via the cover art.

Such an honest album deserves an equally honest appraisal from me. I'm sure there will be those who will be turned off by the fact that the lyrics are essentially Bible verses describing how the Lord is king, Israel is favored, judgment is coming, the wicked will be repaid, and salvation is coming for the righteous. Typically, these sentiments are not near and dear to the hearts and minds of Atheists and secular-progressives.

All that aside, those who are believers or at least have open minds will enjoy this record for exactly what it is - a brilliantly arranged collection of songs performed by an artist who clearly believes in what he's singing. It's a refreshing thing to hear in these tumultuous and mediocre times in which we live.

~ John Masci

Summer Darling : EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

L.A.'s Summer Darling caught the attention of indie music fans in 2004 with the release I Know You~I Never Knew You. The band became known for their beautifully somber melodies, poignant pop hooks, and introspective lyricism. About to release its first recording in nearly 4 years, PLUGGED caught up with frontman Ben Heywood to get the latest scoop on what to expect from these darlings in 2008.

PLUGGED: How did Summer Darling start and how did you get the name?

SUMMER DARLING: SD started the way most bands start, I suppose. I met Dan in a restaurant and he said, "Let's jam" and we actually did. Then I got my girlfriend, Heather, to play bass. Voila, a band was born. The name I stole from a friend of mind. We were in a band together long time ago and were thinking of band names. He suggested Summer Darling but we didn't end up using it. I always kinda liked it.

PLUGGED: Why the long interval between releases?

SD: We lived a lot of life in between. "I Know You" came out in April of 04. Heather and I got married in the summer of 05. Heather then went back to school. Meanwhile we started tracking an album at this really upscale studio. We knew a couple of guys who worked there and they would sneak us in whenever the studio wasn't booked. To make a very long saga short, the opportunity dried up before we could finish anything. While all this was going on, we tried tracking more new jams but after nearly completing a few songs the hard drive crashed and we lost everything. We then met Sean Foye who swooped in and took the reins. "Health of Others" are the songs we started but didn't finish at the fancy studio completed by Sean.

PLUGGED: What is Summer Darling going to be releasing in 2008?

SD: We will release 3 EPs digitally through Oragami and collect them at the end of the year on a 12" LP. "Health of Others" is the first one.

PLUGGED: Explain how you think the SD sound has progressed since the debut LP?

SD: Well, we're more of a band now. I used to write most of the parts for SD but since Dan moved to guitar and Loop joined as the drummer all the songwriting is group oriented. I just come up with the words and melodies and the band as a whole writes the music. Its made us more Built to Spill and less Coffee House. We call it "Guitarchestra".

PLUGGED: I heard that you will be recording with Frank Lenz. What's it like working with Frank, and what does he bring to the table for your sound?

SD: What to say about Frank Lenz? He did "I Know You" and he tracked and produced the second EP we'll be releasing later this spring. Working with Frank is like going to a friend's house and making music. Sometimes you drink too much, sometimes the ideas don't work, sometimes you get angry, but at the end you get an amazingly creative record and you're still friends. Frank is our friend.

PLUGGED: What happened to the deal you had planned with Lujo records?

SD: Lujo and Summer Darling had two different ideas on how to handle our music. It's a case where everyone's hearts were in the right place but we couldn't seem to work together in a way that made us all happy.

PLUGGED: Last year you had two songs "Medication" and "Southern Drawl" posted. Where do they fit in, if at all, in the next releases?

SD: "Southern Drawl" is an old song from our first EP. It's out of print so we tossed it up on myspace for a while. "Medication" is a cover of a Damien Jurado song. Neither will likely show up anywhere else.

PLUGGED: Who's in the SD recording lineup and live show lineup?

SD: Me, Heather, Dan, and Loop. We all sort of play everything and anything that needs to be played.

PLUGGED: Name one place you'd like to play where you haven't yet.

SD: Europe. Canada. Japan. Basically, I need some stamps on my passport. Buffalo.

PLUGGED: What albums have you been listening to lately?

SD: Menomena, Midlake, new Radiohead, new PJ Harvey, Via Audio, Band of Horses.

PLUGGED: You have another band called Death House Chaplain that is releasing an album soon. What's your role in that band, and what should we expect?

SD: I play drums in Death House. The songwriting is done by Matthew Holl. He's one of my favorite songwriters and guitar players. Ever. Expect very interesting rock songs with hooks.

PLUGGED: List five of your favorite films of all time.

SD: Heather is gonna field this one, too: Royal Tennenbaums, Reality Bites, Big Lebowski, 16 Candles, The Goonies.I like Wonder Boys, Beautiful Girls, Big Lebowski. Recently I really enjoyed No Country For Old Men and Children of Men. Films about people.

PLUGGED: Ben, thanks for doing this and best wishes for the band in 2008!

Read PLUGGED's review of Health of Others EP.

http://myspace.com/summerdarlingcheese

Summer Darling - Health of Others EP

Release Date: 1/15/08

Label: Oragami

www.myspace.com/summerdarlingcheese

It's slightly ironic that L.A.'s Summer Darling is set to release their first new recording in almost 4 years right in the middle of winter. When I contacted the band regarding the release of their new EP Health of Others, frontman Ben Heyward joyfully exclaimed "Yes, we finally have new shit!"

Health of Others is one of three internet-only EPs releasing this year with all of them included on a single vinyl LP. Sounds cool, huh? For now, the band gives us this fistful of juicy tunes to whet our appetities. The band used the lengthy interval between releases to refine their brand of moody, catchy, indie rock genious.

The blistering guitar intro on "Barren Womb" has the band immediately pushing the boundaries set by their debut LP I Know You~I Never Knew You. The theme of regret runs straight through this tune with an added dose of reality to make you feel you could be listening in on something you shouldn't.

"Blazing Fire" quickly became my favorite with its incredibly catchy vibe that you won't be able to shake off. Brilliant harmonies by Heather (Ben's wife, and lead vocalist for Kissing Cousins) combine with Ben's sweltering, yet disarming vocal style to create a true indie rock treat.

"Thirsty Desert" slows down the pace a tiny bit, but is no less engaging than its counterparts. The atmospheric, slightly fuzzy anthemic ending is a familiar and welcome page from their debut album.

"Open Grave" may be the most gripping song of the EP with lyrics that really demonstrate Summer Darling's ability and willingness to smash through the facade: (I try really hard to think how others think...I try really hard not to have that next drink, 'cause what would people think?").

Summer Darling is back to deliver the stirring melodies, jarring guitar riffs, and thought-provoking lyrics that fans have been craving. Health of Others showcases the band's ability to rock like the big bands, while achieving a level of credibility others cannot.

~ John M.

The Grizzly Owls - By Night On My Bed

Label: independent
Release date: 10/2007
www.myspace.com/thegrizzlyowls

I figured this record would be a gimmicky attempt at an americana throwback from the husband and wife team that brought us The Calico Sunset (Jenny and Joseph Andreotti). Still, I was interested to check this out because I did enjoy the (at times) over-the-top, yet feverishly catchy girl-fronted Calico Sunset brand of electro-clash pop. Jenny Andreotti is the vocalist on Grizzly Owls as well, so I thought this would combine for an interesting storm of sugary vocals, experimental gadgetry, and American gothic.

"What's A Girl To Do" is done to the beat of cowboy ballad with the vocals sounding a little too perky. It just doesn't seem to fit at first, but it grows on you a bit. My first impression was "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly" movie soundtrack meets The Calico Sunset. This is gonna be the "spaghetti western" of indie rock!!!

"Jeremiah" is an out-of-kilter and unpredictably dark song that works extremely well for Jenny's voice. The addition of keys and sparse guitars accentuate Jenny's breathy delivery to create a somber indie rock sound.

"Rifles and Hemlines" is the culmination of everything that is unique, refreshing, and attractive about this record. The guitars are both crisp and twangy with quirky vocals that are delivered in Jenny Andeotti's own playful style. Interesting lyrics depict cultural realities of the olden days: ("Women keep their hemlines below their knees, after all, no respectable girl wants to be a tease.")

"Oh Good God, How I Want That Man" is clearly the stand-out song here with the use of keys and harmonica adding delicacy to the tone with clever lyrics to sweep you off your feet:
("Could you love me if my breasts were a little bigger...could you love me if you weren't already married... could you love me if you knew if I existed?")

Chorus: ("Oh good God How I want that man; I want to feel his fingers run through my hair; I want to feel his breath as he whispers in my ear; I want to feel his lips pressed against my neck.").

The highly danceable "Twenty-Six" is the most upbeat song on the record and is more familiar territory for those who have heard the Andreotti's music before.

From the cover art and inside photograph of Jenny's ancestors to lyrical references, everything about By Night At My Bed is an homage to the dustbowl era of the late 1800s, early 1900s. Unique, fresh, and infectious - it's fun listening even for the cynical indie music grinch.

If you thought The Calico Sunset was a bit obnoxious sounding, you may enjoy the off-beat, immediately engaging, rhythmically complex, and surpisingly melodic music of The Grizzly Owls. Give this a listen or three before you make a judgement. And remember, we are all children of the Dust Bowl.

~John M.

Kat Jones - He's The One I Need The Most (Christmas EP)

Label: independent

Release date: 12/2007

www.myspace.com/katjones

While being short and sweet, this little 4-song EP is definitely heartwearming and delightful as well. This Christmas EP is Kat Jones' first since her critically acclaimed debut La Rosa, La Calavera in 2004.

Track 1: "I'll Be Home For Christmas". This is a completely redone version of a song she included on a disc of demos a few years ago. This version is Richard Swift-esque, with a cascade of lively keys and horns.

Track 2: "He's The One I Need The Most". The title track is the best song on the disc as it taps into the true meaning of the season, which is a refreshing change in music today. It has a very catchy chorus that is beautifully sung by Kat.

Track 3: "Bring A Torch Jeanette, Isabela". It's a very mellow, stripped down tune with sparse guitar and dreamy vocals.

Track 4: "Without A Sound". This is the not-so-hidden track of the CD, mainly because it is included in the track list and has a title. Hidden or not, this song is worthy of attention. So fragile and delicate, this soft tune almost breaks as the light guitar and gentle vocals sweep you away.

After three years, it's nice to hear some new music from Kat Jones, just in time to make a great stocking stuffer for the holidays!

PLUGGED'S TOP 5 of 2007

Some people celebrate the new year by watching a ball drop. I celebrate by revisiting my favorite music releases of the past year.

5. The Rosebuds - "Night of the Furies"
(Merge - apr/2007)
This album is much darker and moodier than the previous releases, which is why
I like it so much. Listen for hints of New Order and The Smiths in these songs. Also, Kelly is singing more (which is a good thing!).

4. The Dark Romantics - "Some Midnight Kissin"
(Lujo - feb/2007)
Yes, this album was constantly playing in my house and on my mp3 player this year. I never get tired of it. We drove three hours to see a live show last summer so you know I'm not kidding.

3. Doug Burr - "On Promenade" (VBM/Spune - sept/2007)
Who? Do your homework and read our review. He's from Denton, Texas and is a new favorite of PLUGGED. This was the biggest surprise of 2007. Outstanding music.

2. Menomena - "Friend and Foe" (Barsuk - jan/2007)
It's infectious, dark, and off-beat indie rock. This album is the cure for the music doldrums. It doesn't get any better than "Air Raid" and "Rotten Hell".

Best album of 2007.....and the winner is:

1. Richard Swift - "Dressed Up For The Letdown" (Secretly Canadian - feb/2007)
If you haven't heard of Richard Swift yet, then you must not listen to indie music.

Cheyenne - The Whale

Release date: 12/2007

Label: independent

The Whale is not just an album. It's a hand-clappin', foot stompin' good time that could easily be the soundtrack of a movie set in an old west saloon.

Cheyenne creatively fuses elements of indie rock, country, and folk to create a sound that is a unique and refreshing slice of "americana". This band breaks your heart with a ballad and then a beer bottle with the very next song.

The opening track "The Whale" gets the hands clapping quickly with a sound reminiscent of Wilco's Being There. "Broken English", "The Fashion", and "The Army Marching Past" get the feet stompin' while showing off Cheyenne's indie rock swagger.

"Big Weather" is the best example of Cheyenne's "riding in the back of the pickup truck" brand of indie rock with a big chorus of Beau Jennings singing ("baby one of these days we're gonna send the weather back").

Heartbreakers "Cimarron River", and "The Curtain" are drenched in sincerity and infused with somber vocals, keys, and harmonica. These songs prominently display Cheyenne's folk-country sensibility better than any other tracks.

The Whale leaves a lasting impression that pays homage to Dylan and Wilco while still creating something brand new for those of us who love catchy melodies that make you think of the heartland.

- John M.

The Autumns - Fake Noise From A Box Of Toys

Label: Bella Union
Release Date: 10/2007

Dream-pop wakes up. Big time.

The Los Angeles-based band The Autumns are back with a new record Fake Noise From A Box of Toys, just in time for fall 2007. This album shattered my expectations and is easily my favorite record by the band.

The Autumns prove on the opening tracks "Boys" and "Clem" that they can deliver more than just sugary dream-pop tunes. These two outstanding tracks are loaded with aggressive guitars, whirling vocals, poppy choruses, and driving beats that will surprise you.

However, if you still want the sugary dream-pop, The Autumns provide some familiar sounds on track 4 "The Midnight Knock" and track 10 "The Beautiful Boot". Overall, the Brit-pop vibe prevails. "Glass Jaw" and "Adelaide" will smack you in the head if you're caught dreaming.

Other songs like ''Night Music", "Only Young", "Uncle Slim", also worth noting for their singable choruses and delightful melodies. The record ends passionately with "Oh My Heart", which turned out to be my favorite of the 12 songs.

The Autumns' enhanced pop sensibility and rock intensity will appeal to a wider audience, while still differentiating themselves from their contemporaries. Old-school Autumns fans need not worry, though, because there's still plenty of noise in this box of toys.

Check out some songs from Fake Noise From A Box Of Toys here.

Gileah and The Ghost Train - (Self-Titled)

Label: The Love Library
Release Date: 10/23/07

Every once in a while a CD comes along that has so much vitality and substance that it actually makes the most cynical indie music listener love music again.

Gileah and the Ghost Train not just a band. It's the song in your head. It's the struggle you endure. It's the pain you feel. It's the doubt that lingers. It's the hope we all look forward to. More than music, Gileah and The Ghost Train takes you on a journey from the pit of despair to the peak of hope in a span of 35 minutes.

Gileah and the Ghost Train's sound has evolved enormously from their debut release The Golden Planes. Gileah Taylor's vocals have matured, the soundscape is much fuller, the lyricism is more advanced, and the record moves at a lightning pace. The instrumentation is complete with guitars, piano, percussion, strings, sound effects, etc. This train is on a mission and it rarely slows down and doesn't make any stops. There's a perfect mix of high-tempo and slow tunes so the listener remains fully engaged.

As for the music, I cannot help but draw comparisons to Sixpence None The Richer, Cat Power, and The Sundays. Gileah Taylor's voice is a chameleon. It can change from a sweet tone reminiscent of Leigh Nash and then on the next track take on a darker tone like that of Chan Marshall. But just because their sound reminds you of other bands doesn't mean Gileah doesn't bring anything new and fresh to the table. They combine the best of their predecessors to bring you some of the best folk-indie-pop that you haven't heard.

Track 1 "The Devil" sets a deceptively ominous tone for the record with vocals that are smoky and sultry alongside piano and sparse guitar which eventually erupt into a rousing mix of everything the band can throw at you.

Track 2 "The Emergency" continues the somber tone and Cat Power-esque vocal stylings. This time the pace is faster and you'll be singing along to the great chorus.

Track 3 "The Escape" reminds me of Sixpence None the Richer right from the first note. This song demonstrates how Gileah's voice can change on a whim to a sweeter, higher tone. Another great pop song that is quite addictive and singable, Gileah adds a sense of swagger and confidence to the vocals.

Track 4 "The Lazarus" introduces some light into the darkness with a more hopeful tone and chorus of :

One day it's gonna be alright...

One day It's gonna be alright when you rise.

Track 8 "The Shadow" is an outstanding song that has a rockin' pace and will stand out as one of your favorites. Sing it - the lyrics are included!

Gileah saves the best for last. Track 10 "The Spirit" is a happy song. It's also very honest and real. This inspiring song has an interesting synth intro and also the best chorus on the album:

At last my voice will joined with a thousand others

one sweet chorus

all of us singing hallelujah!

All I can say is if you like Cat Power and Sixpence (or Indie-Folk-Pop in general) than you shouldn't hesitate to check out this wonderful band at www.myspace.com/gileah . I cannot possibly recommend this CD with any more enthusiasm.

~John M.

Kissing Cousins - EP3

Label: Velvet Blue Music
Release Date: December 2006

This all-girl, no-nonsense band from L.A. has released their third EP and prove that they get better with each release (or should I say, "kiss"?).

Here's a kiss-by-kiss synopsis:

Track 1: "Weigh The Options". A mid-tempo tune that is brimming with lush string arrangements, sparse guitar parts, and somber vocals by Heather. These elements work together to set a formidable and unnerving mood that looms and swells throughout the song.

Track 2: "One-Eyed Woman". This rock song pulls no punches and sucks you in immediately. It's got the down-right-dirty vocals, driving guitars, and a singable chorus that drips of 1980s rock influences. Do I hear a flute in the background as well? Yes, this song has it all. Clearly, this is the best song of the four. It would be the obvious choice for a radio single. Damn, I wish I had a radio show.

Track 3: "Silhouettes". This is a live version of the song from their first EP. The track is basically unchanged, but the rawness of the live performance makes it even better than the original version. My guess is you'll like this version better too, especially if you haven't been able to catch a live show. The end of this live version is pretty amazing.

Track 4: "Take From Me". It's a slow-tempo tune with just voice and piano. The song is laced with simplicity, but is equally honest and meaningful. This song is effective because of the passionately sung vocals that convey a sense of sincerity and transparency.

There's nothing not to love about this band. Since they have released only EPs and no LPs, it's perfect listening for those of us who love great music but have short attention spans.

Hear some songs from EP3 at the Kissing Cousins Myspace page.

~John M.

June Panic - Raising the Canopy Wire 12"

Label: Burnt Toast Vinyl

Release Date: 3/6/2007

Format: 12" vinyl

Raising the Canopy Wire is one in a series of Burnt Toast Vinyl's one-sided 12" LP releases. To be honest, I really haven't liked the obscure direction BTV's releases have gone lately - mostly instrumental and more artsy than substanstial. However, this little 5 song acoustic gem is worth a listen. Previously, the only June Panic I've heard was the full-length Baby's Breadth - which I liked a lot. This 12" demonstrates the more delicate side of June Panic that you might enjoy while sitting around a campfire at dusk.

The 12" has one brand new song, acoustic versions of 2 songs from the full length Horror Vacui, and two cover songs.

1. Raising the Canopy Wire

2. Oh I Love Her So (Ramones)

3. David Poe

4. I'd Have To Be Crazy (Willie Nelson)

5. Baby Divine

The title track "Raising of the Canopy Wire" opens the album with June's Dylan-esque vocals grabbing your attention and driving the song with the guitar strumming holding steady underneath. It's a great new song. It's catchy and will have you singing along.

The Ramones cover is OK. I'd probably appreciate it more if I was more familiar with the Ramones. June does a good job of making this song his own especially since it was originally an old-school punk rock song.

"David Poe" is also in the category of just being OK. It's not great nor horrible. It's the track that loses your attention for brief moments while it's playing.

The Willie Nelson cover is fantastic. I'm not even close to being a Willie Nelson fan so my hat's off to June for taking this song and putting his own sound to it. The guitar work is delicate and just a bit quirky. It works for this song because the changes keep your attention throughout the song. The somber tone makes it a good song choice for June's voice.

The closer, "Baby Divine", is the maybe the best song here. It's more upbeat and some catchy parts that will also have you singing.

Overall, this 12" is a good choice if you like the folk-acoustic-indie genre. It's some the best stuff available from a record label that has been declining in quality for years. This album is one of those rare gems where every track is strong, chock full of hooks and great songwriting. If Doug Burr's not your new favorite singer/songwriter, it's because you haven't heard of him yet.

Doug Burr is truly a craftsman. On Promenade is 11 tracks carved by experience and stained by faith. The opener "Slow Southern Home" takes charge from the onset. It is the crown jewel of this record, and in my opinion defines Doug Burr as an up-and-coming star in this genre. This song makes you long for the simpler, more innocent times of your past. It conjures up some sad images and infuses some joy for good measure. I love the chorus in this song as it swells alongside the sound of the harmonica.

"Graniteville" is a slow ride in the open country. The lightly strummed guitar, heartfelt vocals, twang, and the gradually intensifying chorus will send chills up your spine:

Wake up baby, there's a train coming. Don't you know how much I love you?

"In The Garden" is the most upbeat tune on the record. It seriously rocks. Or, at least it comes pretty close to rocking. This will be the song that will have you kickin' up your heels as well as singing along.

"Always Travel Light" is so singable and country-inspired that it could easily be the video of the week on CMT and wouldn't sound out of place at all.

Doug Burr is Rocky Votolato without the angst. He's every bit as good of a songwriter too. His vocal style has a hint of Johnny Cash. Most of all, Doug Burr injects just enough hope and light into his songs and still keeps it real by keeping a somber tone. After all, we still live in a pretty dark world.

You could describe Doug Burr's songs as being down-home country, alt-country, indie, folk, indie-folk, or whatever category you like. One thing is for sure: Doug Burr's brand of music doesn't make you feel at home. It takes you home.

Listen to songs from On Promenade here.

The Late Virginia Summers - Sundowning

Release Date: 5/16/07
Label: Red Star Community (RSC)

Instrumental music has a very difficult task. The artform must find a way to invoke passion, emotion, and meaning without the use of lyrics. Newcomers The Late Virginia Summers overcome the challenge as well as any instrumental band I've heard. They effectively use intriguing song titles and mood to affect the listener.

Simply put, this album is entrancing.

The Late Virginia Summers is a pleasantly surprising instrumental band that I discovered through a myspace friend request. Their first LP Sundowning is 11 tracks soaked in drum beats, bells, keys, guitars, and various other noises that will certainly arouse your ears. I was looking for music that would be mellow and ideal for late night listening. This album was just as sublime and experimental as I expected. To my surprise, tracks like "Winding Walk, Winter Rain", "Who's Afraid of The Late Virginia Summers", and "You Are What Gets Me In Trouble" are groovy good pop songs with neat vibes. These songs have addictive melodies that exceeded my expectations.

If I'm being completely honest, the only aspect of this album that I don't like is the artwork. For my taste, it doesn't fit the music. I would expect the artwork to reflect the somber tone of the music more than it does. Perhaps it's the mostly white background that doesn't seem quite right. It's a minor criticism and merely an aesthetic one at best.

This is a good album to listen to first thing in the morning because it gets you going without being overbearing or annoying. It's ideal music for "chilling-out" before bedtime or even while you sleep. The music lulls you to sleep with hypnotic sounds and gently pulls you back into consciousness with a catchy beat. Sundowning is a highly focused and cohesive effort as it sets a mood and sticks to it without jumping all around. It's not something I'd listen to while driving or doing yard work, but it certainly has its place in my CD player. All 11 tracks will transport you into a state of relaxation without being boring or mundane. If you need a break from the anxiety of the world, then this is the CD to consider adding to your collection. I highly recommend this album for fans of Unwed Sailor and Saxon Shore. I don't dance, but I do take walks every day with my mp3 player. As I was listening to "Power and Strife", I noticed it had me walking faster...and faster...and faster. I didn't get a cool down while listening to this album. My doctor would be thrilled.

Power and Strife takes the three best songs from their debut EP, "Fast Forward", "The Emergency", and "Impressionable". The songs sound pretty much the same except for some new organs or synths in the background. These songs were great on the EP, so I'm glad they didn't mess with them too much. To see these songs included on the full-length was a huge plus for me.

The opening track "Power and Strife" sets the tone that this record is gonna be a party and you're gonna have some fun. My favorites are "Kiss Killer", "Sound The Alarms", and "Impressionable". If you like to dance and sing then these tunes will not disappoint because they really get you moving. The two tracks that kinda get lost in the shuffle are "Dostoevsky's Tears", and "Terrible Lovers." These are good songs, but are a bit forgettable when packaged with 9 superb tracks that cast a pretty big shadow. The song "Beautiful Lie" speaks to me in a spiritual way (I think we've all been there before) about failure and redemption.

Silver Cities brings us 11 high-octane tunes that meld the best elements of 70s and 80s rock 'n roll. These are dance-floor compatible songs about greed, frustration, bad lovers, class struggle, and redemption. I have a great compliment to describe this record. You know those lame CD release parties where the band doesn't actually play and some obnoxious DJ just spins the record instead? Everyone is supposed to get drunk, dance, and pretend they're at an actual rock show. Well, Power and Strife is so good that it might actually be able to pull off a pretty cool CD release party. This band probably puts on a hot live show and hopefully I'll get to see them play someday.

Overall, the band has a fresh and unique sound that is very catchy and fun. The running time of the album is 32:10. But if you're not careful, you could easily look at your watch and realize you have been listening to this record for more than three hours. This album rocks, picking up right where the Another Song EP left off. Exactly as billed, all ten tracks are dripped in hot guitar licks, sexy lyrics, and singable choruses that will have you moving your booty in no time.

First off, it's always a smart move to mention it was produced by Jason Martin (frontman of indie rock favorite Starflyer 59). Enough said.

Also, I LOVE the cover art. It sets the tone for the record before the CD even leaves the jewel case. The lips on the cover lure you in and say to you,"this album is hot, sexy, and it's about love and breakin' hearts." The flip-side of the cover insert is the exact same, except it has red lips instead of blue. You have a choice depending on your mood, which is unique.

Some Midnight Kissin' has two tracks from the EP: "So Confused", and "Another Song For Another Night". The tracks sound the same and essentially untouched and not re-recorded. They sound great packaged with the new songs, so why mess with them, right? Of the new tracks, the stand-outs for me are "A Million Bucks", "This Is The Sound", "Baby Boy, Baby Girl", and the closer "I Gotta Feeling". All tracks have scorching guitars and singable hooks that will grip you like a vice.

I have to say that the final track on most albums is normally forgettable. That is not the case with last track on this record, "I Gotta Feeling" is arguably the best song of the bunch. It's a very sulty, 1980s-sounding song that has the best chorus I've heard in some time:

It's alright if you wanna dance

I gotta feelin' that these jams will lead you to romance.

It's alright if you wanna move I gotta feeling that you know exactly what to do...

Staunch indie rocksters may recognize the bluesy tune "This Is The Sound" which was taken from lead singer Eric Collin's side project The Party People EP, released by Velvet Blue Music. The song was re-recorded to fit the sound of this record and as a fan of The Party People, I was very stoked to see it included on this album. It sounds even better than the original version.

The debut LP from The Dark Romantics certainly lives up to it's moniker. It's dark. It's romantically dark and sexy. It's 10 tracks of unrelenting rock 'n roll, so don't expect it to give you and that special someone a slow dance. All you hear are the sound of crickets and Cheyenne's Land Rush EP playing on "repeat". This charming EP can either sooth your soul or melt the coldest heart. Beau Jennings and Co. have come up with 6 new tunes to precede the full-length which is due out later this year. This EP is a bit more high-octane and upbeat than Cheyenne's last full-length "I Am Haunted, I Am Alive". The stand-out tracks on this EP are "This Is The Fashion", "The Army Marching Past", and my personal favorite "I'll Be Gone" which is so good I think it's worth the price of the EP alone. The folkish, twangy, light strumming of the guitar is perfectly complemented by the sounds of the harmonica. They build the song to a climax where Jennings sings

"I'll be gone before you wake up. I'll be wrong and you'll be right...but I'll be damned if I don't make you love me tonight."

If I had to pick the song on this EP that would win (or even break) your heart, it would be this one. Whether you enjoyed the first full-length or if this is your introduction to Cheyenne, you likely won't be disappointed with this EP.
Cheyenne has managed to re-incorporate the same passion and folk-alternative sensibility that stole your heart on "I am Haunted, I am Alive". They've expanded their sound and will have you kicking up your heels and singing along even more with "The Land Rush". Think of a bar fight breaking out in the once quiet saloon you liked so much and you'll get an idea of what to expect. The difference is here you'll end up with a great six-song EP and no one gets hurt or arrested. Everyone wins.

Listen to some tracks from The Land Rush EP at Cheyenne's Myspace page, www.myspace/cheyenne.

Starflyer 59 - My Island

Mic The Mic mp3

How many albums can sf59 put out? How many more times can sf59 refresh their sound and stay relevant and interesting? There's no end in site for frontman Jason Martin. After more than 20 releases, Sf59 has retained a loyal following because of the band's uncanny ability maintain a fresh sound while vowing to never put out the same record twice.

Of the previous sf59 releases, "Old" is the most similar in pace to this new record My Island. This album was hyped as the most upbeat sf59 record to date, with more BPMs (beats per minute) than any other sf59 record. It's true - the pace of My Island is like greased lightning and is not hindered by a slow jam. That's right - no slow jams on this island.

The bass lines are more noticeable than on any other sf59 release. This is the first time I've noticed the bass player's contribution on a sf59 record. You'll notice it particularly on "Pearl of Great Price".

The percussion attacks are ferociously kicking and smacking with authority like never before, as evidenced during the intro of the title track "My Island".
.
Jason's vocals are noticeably gothic-sounding, taking you back to Joy Division, The Cure, Depeche Mode, and Echo & the Bunnymen. The vocals are heavy and dark, with the same breathy delivery that we've come to love from Martin. Track 7 "Division" is easily the darkest example of this.

The stand-out tracks on this record are "Lifeguard", "Pearl of Great Price", "Mic The Mic", and the closer "Ideas For The Talented" . The album opens with "The Frontman" which is a pretty good tune, but not one of sf59's best album openers. I can say with certainty that "Ideas" is one of my favorite sf59 closers.

Though not their best effort, this is the only sf59 record that doesn't have a "dud". Every song is strong. Talking Voice vs. Singing Voice (2005) is still my favorite sf59 record.

Goat Explosion - Come On Make Me Feel mp3

Download mp3

They started off as Goat Explosion. For a couple weeks they called themselves Commoner, then changed their name to Elkland and signed a deal with major record label Columbia. After just one release on Sony, Elkland is dead and they are Goat Explosion again.

It's not only the name that has changed in the last several years, but also the sound. The band released a 5 song CDR called Night Cranes as Goat Explosion. That recording was beautifully experimental, much like Radiohead's Kid A, while successive releases took on a 1980s synth-pop sound reminiscent of New order and Depeche Mode.

The return of Goat Explosion is marked by the new ep Hope Is Alive, and this mp3 is evidence that the band is back and ready learn from their mistakes which made the last Elkland album Golden such a disappointment. Yes, I was disappointed. There were some good songs on Golden, but all 12 tracks started to song the same after repeated listens.

"Come On make Make Feel" demonstrates the bands' ability to write a great pop song. It comes fully loaded with a singable chorus and danceable beats. When you hear the other new songs, you'll notice right away that this band is BACK and better than ever. Unlike Golden, each song offers something different and unique than the others. This is the first single off of their second full-length called Operation:Surgery . This impressive record was self-recorded entirely in the band's home studio and the artwork was created by the band as well. If the self-sufficiency of Husband and Wife is not enough to garner your praise, then the music will indeed.

All 12 songs are delicate and fragile, and like breaking glass will surely grab your attention. The overall mood of this album reminds me a lot of It's Hard To Find A Friend era Pedro the Lion while the vocals are dripping with passion similar in style to Summer Darling. These bands are good company for Husband and Wife who sound like they are on to something really special. I can definitely recommend this record for fans of Death Cab For Cutie, Dashboard Confessional, Pedro The Lion, and Summer Darling. The truth is, no matter how good the record is it will not likely win over any new fans. Tooth and Nail records does an absolutely awful job of promoting sf59. Instead, T&N seems like it would rather promote "the next big thing" resulting in a label full of mediocre bands that all sound the same. Conversely, no matter how lousy the record is, sf59 will likely sell the same amount of units as normal because every one of these loyal fans would probably still buy it.

I am not one of the privileged few who get an advance copy of My Island, so I cannot say whether the record is good, bad, or just ugly. I can tell you that the 2 tracks I have heard are fabulous - and noticeably more upbeat than most sf59 albums. Jason Martin always talks about how the Brit-pop bands of the 1980s have influenced his songwriting, but I think "Mic The Mic" is the most 1980s-sounding song sf59 has created.

VHS OR BETA : The Melting Moon mp3

Here's a record you can have some fun with. Play this mp3 or the actual record for a fellow music lover, but don't tell him/her who the band is. Then, after a couple minutes, ask "So, how do you like the new Cure record?" They'll bite. I can almost guarantee it.

I don't know much about VHS or BETA (Astralwerks), except that I could never rent Beta videos when I was kid because I had a VCR that only played VHS. Seriously, after hearing this record today I can say that they sound like The Cure. A lot. I'll be more specific and compare VHS or BETA to the early Cure material of the "Boys Don't Cry" era. It doesn't match the pop sensibility or songwriting of The Cure, but comes close in terms of vocals, guitars, synths, and energy. At times, VHS or BETA rocks pretty hard while throwing some new wave at you in the form of synthesizers.

Some pop music purists may revolt on me if I say that VHS or BETA sounds like the Cure or any pop music staple of that calibre. After hearing this band you'll know deep down in your heart that they do. I have no problem when artists pay homage to the bands that have inspired them, and, if as a result they end up emulating their sound, fine. I say, if you're gonna do it - DO IT WELL. Many new indie bands have tried to sound like an 80s band and end up sounding ridiculous or all their songs sounding the same. VHS or BETA does their 1980s thing very well on their new record Night on Fire. It's 1980s post-punk new wave pop that is quite unlike anything I've heard from the indie scene, and better than what the Cure has put out lately.

Summer Lawns : Concrete and Wood mp3

Album: First We Waited...Then It Started

Label: Stunning Models On Display

As soon as I heard Summer Lawns I knew there was something special about them. It didn't take me long to realize it was a special blend of Radiohead and Slowdive. The vocals are eerily similar to Thom Yorke of Radiohead and the overall vibe reminds me a little of Slowdive's Souvlaki.

I can't imagine fans of either Thom Yorke or Slowdive not appreciating Summer Lawns. In fact, if there's anyone out there in "Indieville" who was put-off by the constant quirkiness of Radiohead or occasionally boring atmospheric ambience of Slowdive, then Summer Lawns will inspire repeated spins on your cd player. It takes the best of both and builds a 9-song album that is easy to listen to in one sitting and neither gets too cheery or too depressing. Great stuff for early morning hangover or late-night drunken stupor listening. It's great music for sobriety too, because then you'll remember the name of that great band you heard last night...Summer Lawns. I never heard of them until they sent me a friend request on Myspace. Say whatever you want about Myspace. The truth is that Myspace has revolutionized music and how bands promote themselves. It has become easier for bands to connect with music fans and get their tunes heard as well as communicate with listeners.

Mezzanine Owls manages to pay homage to such bands as Jesus and Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine, Ride, and The Cure effectively without ripping them off. They've created their own unique sound that is intelligent and will leave you mesmerized. The vocals, in particular, are surely a highlight for me as they remind me a bit of Bono of U2.

Quite often full-length records feature the stronger tracks near the beginning and leave a few weaker songs at the end. This is not the case with Slingshot Echoes. In fact, my favorite tunes could very well be the last two, particularly "Dark Too Early". As a whole, the record is amazing, musically smart, and focused. Believe me--there's no "dud" on this album.

The chosen track "Lightbulb" is off their soon to be release full-length Slingshot Echoes. They sent me a friend request on Myspace. It's cool to discover bands this way. Not only do I get to check out some great new tunes, I end up with some friends besides "Tom".

"Keep it Simple" is a track off of their forthcoming full-length due out in October 2006(Strike Gently Records). Think indie rock meets bluesy-classic rock and you'll get a sense of what it sounds like. Of course, the best way to know what it sounds like is to download the friggin' song and crank it up.

Check their page at www.myspace.com/thenewlows. The tongue? The lips? The heavy petting? Southern California's all-girl band Kissing Cousins delivers it all on what I believe is the ultimate "make-out" CD.

In the past, the thought of "all-girl" bands conjured images of sweet, sugary, teenage-targeted crap that you could surely purchase at the mall. Here, Kissing Cousins puts together 4 songs that are dark, sexy, melancholy, and downright naughty- sounding. The EP opens with the slow-paced and slightly unnerving track "Deadline". The slow and steady pace of the song lulls you into the false sense that the CD is going to be safe and merely flirtatious.

The 2nd track "Live Without You" is more unsettling than the first as it starts gradually with Heather Bray Heyward singing "It's so cold alone..." before jumping your bones with the chorus of "I can't live without you." This track is followed by "Act of Birth" which lets you off the hook a bit, but is no less haunting and somber. This track is definitely as close to sweet as this EP gets. Heather's vocals are truly beautiful on this song with the gentle pianos underneath. The closer "Let You Down" is no soft and innocent goodnight kiss. The guitars have sort of a Black Sabbath type of nastiness with Heather throwing in some sexy sounding "Ah-Ahs" in the chorus.

There is nothing sweet or innocent about these 4 songs. After you listen to Kissing Cousins you will feel so dirty that you'll want to take a shower. I love every second of this EP and so will you.

Frank Lenz - VileLenz and Thieves

Label: Hidden Agenda

Release date: March 21, 2006

mp3: Bullets in the Wall

It's refreshing when a songwriter expresses his brutally honest frustration and sense of betrayal in his songs. One needs to look no further than the album title VileLenz and Thieves to get an idea what's in store on this release. VileLenz and Thieves is the third official release from Frank Lenz the solo artist. Who is Frank Lenz? If you are an avid indie music fan, check the credits in your record collection. Chances are pretty good that you'll see his name as one of the players or as the producer on at least half of them.

There's little about this record that is peppy or light-hearted. There's no manufactured sense of hope or joy. This is by far Lenz's most honest, transparent, and introspective work to date. Themes of betrayal run like rivers through songs like "Weekend Friends":

Best friends on weekends and holidays...everybody runs
when trouble comes.

And on track 3 "I've Got Other Things To Do":

Some friends said they had enough, hanging around with me
had gotten rough. Maybe I should stand up for myself and tell them all to go to hell.

"Bad Art" finds Lenz colorfully responding to critics with frustration and some self-depracation:

I took a shot and made bad art, because message board
kids don't know a lot.

I don't know shit and never have...

I've always been a fucking poser...

Conquest Slaughter, moron fodder...

My dick has an expiration date, do you like the taste?
Check the date.

Musically, VileLenz & Thieves is top-notch. Think 1970s singer/songwriter meets modern indie rock experimentalism and that will give an idea what this sounds like. The standout tune "Libertution" is the only rockin', upbeat tune of the 12. The track has a bass line that drives the tune, and the chorus will have you singing along. Of the other 11 tracks, 2 are soft instrumentals while the other 9 are somber ballads.

Frank Lenz gives indie rocksters something to cling to when misery strikes. This is the ultimate sad bastard record to be played in the early morning or late night hours. I'm sure some folks will be put-off by the melancholy tone and depressing themes contained in VileLenz and Thieves.

Then again, there's a little bit of Frank Lenz in all of us, right?

</align>

David Bazan - Fewer Moving Parts [EP]

Label: Eat My Flesh, Drink My Blood

Release date: June 13, 2006

mp3: Cold Beer and Cigarettes

If the cover art had "Pedro The Lion" stamped on it instead of "David Bazan", fans might never know the difference. This is David Bazan's first release since dropping the "Pedro The Lion" moniker and becoming a solo effort. "Pedro The Lion" was basically just David Bazan anyway, with a rotating cast backing him at shows.

The best way to describe this EP is that it combines elements of Control, Achilles Heel, and David Bazan's electronic side project "Headphones". The result is 5 indie rock songs that follow the logical progression of sound for Pedro The Lion. All the songs are fairly catchy and singable, with "Cold Beer and Cigarettes" being the stand-out track. It's true that the songs tend to sound a bit bland after a while, and repeated listens tend to dwindle in just a short time. I think this EP is a must for Pedro/Bazan fans, but it won't win fans or break any new ground.

Anyone that was bummed about Pedro The Lion breaking up has absolutely no need to break out the anti-depressants. Fewer Moving Parts has everything that a Pedro The Lion could, except the cute and cuddly name.

Viva Voce - Get Yr Blood Sucked Out

Release Date: 9.12.06

Label: Barsuk Records

mp3: We Do Not Fuck Around

An album's edgy, sexy, and intriguing title doesn't necessarily translate to good music and repeated spins, does it?. Ofcourse not, silly. You should never judge a book (or CD!) by its title. However, inside the bright orange cover and behind the title lies 12 outstanding guitar-driven, classic rock-inspired indie rock gems.

"Get Yr Blood Sucked Out" is the fourth full length album from the Portland-based husband and wife outfit Viva Voce (Kevin and Anita Robinson), and their first on the Barsuk record label (Death Cab For Cutie, Rocky Votolato)

I truly believe this is Viva Voce's best effort due to the fact that it is just pure classic rock 'n roll with an indie accent. Once again, Kevin and Anita share lead vocals, giving the songs a nice variety. I still prefer the female touch however, like on the opening track "Believer", and on "When Planets Collide", "So Many Miles", and "Faster Than a Dead Horse". Kevin's vocals on "From The Devil Himself" will tingle your spine as the chorus repeats "You're gonna get your blood sucked out". The track "Special Thing" also features Kevin on vocals and is quite quirky and laden with sweetness.

If you appreciate the band's musical progression from "Lovers Lead The Way" to "The Heat Can Melt Your Brain", then "Get Yr Blood Sucked Out" is just what the doctor ordered.

Denison Witmer/Saxon Shore @ The Bug Jar

It was a hot and steamy evening at The Bug Jar in Rochester, NY and about half the audience was brave enough to sit on a bar floor to watch Militia Group recording artist Denison Witmer perform.

He's well-known for his enchanting solo acoustic performances, but the Rochester NY audience was in for a special treat as a reward for enduring the oppressive heat.

I got there just in time. With a cold beer in hand, I politely budged my way to the front of the audience to see Denison Witmer finishing his sound-check with acoustic guitar in hand. He told the audience to hang tight and that the show was to begin in about 20 minutes. He quickly changed his mind and said he would just start playing solo right away and give Rochester a nice long show. He likes Rochester. Rochester likes Denison.

He opened the show with one of my favorites, "Healing Time". He also played acoustic versions of "California Brown and Blue", and "Los Angeles".

Then the members of Saxon Shore took the stage and added a whole new dimension to the already sublime performance of Denison Witmer. With all the bells and whistles of a full band, Denison played "Grandma Mary", "Little Flowers", "Everything But Sleep", and of course, "The 80s."

Reverting to the intimacy of the solo acoustic was a perfect end to the set. Denison excused the band, and performed the favorites "Stations" and "Are You A Dreamer?"

It was a nice variety of acoustic and full band performances that I have never before experienced at a Denison Witmer show. Rochester was the last stop on the month long tour with Burnt Toast Vinyl recording artist Saxon Shore.

all photos by Melanie M.

Starflyer 59 @ The Buffalo Icon

OK, here's how it works. Fans will yell out song requests at a Starflyer 59 show. They will usually yearn to hear oldies like "Blue Collar Love", "Sled", or "She's The Queen." Starflyer 59 frontman Jason Martin will politely dismiss the request by saying any of following comments...

"It's comin' right up, man"

"You got it, dude", or

"I don't even know that song."

The requested song never gets played, and everyone laughs about it later.

Keeping with tradition, I requested "Hazel Would" (from the first sf59 album "Silver") and Jason said "It's comin!", so I thought it surely wasn't going to be played. Jason threw us all a curve ball and actually played "Hazel Would" last, and it was AWESOME. Hearing sf59 play a song off the classic album "Silver" was everything I always dreamed it would be. Until now, all I could do was dream. Enough of that. Here's the whole set list from the evening....

A Good Living

A-Lists Go On

No New Kinda Story

new song (I don't know the title)

Easy Street

First Heart Attack

Unbelievers

Hazel Would

Other than "Hazel Would", the highlight for me was hearing "First Heart Attack" because I've never heard the band perform it live. I was glad to hear "A Good Living", because it was my favorite track on "Talking Voice Vs. Singing Voice", so I thought it was a great way to open the set.

OK, now I must point out the negatives. As always, the sf59 set was too short. The performance clocked in at 8 songs running about 35 minutes. I guess that's par for the course since it was 98 degrees in there with sf59 as the opening act (out of 4 bands) and most people seemed to be there for The Format. I was also a little disappointed that sf59 didn't play "Good Sons", or their great new single "I Win". Not a big deal, as the good far outweighs the negative.

As a sidenote, notice the rag wrapped around Jason's mic. It's not a rag actually, but a t-shirt Jason put there during the soundcheck to prevent the infamous "Ps" from popping (I am just guessing). It came in handy later when he used it to wipe the sweat from his brow. I would have snatched it as a souvenir but I already have enough nasty smelling shirts of my own.

It's always a reason to get excited when Starflyer 59 comes to your hometown and thoroughly rocks the stage. This band is so damn good and yet so damn underrated that it makes you think people in the music world have their ears in the sand. Surely Jason Martin could sign onto big indie labels like Matador or Jade Tree and have his songs featured on all the MTV reality shows. But Jason Martin is all about loyalty, quality, and longevity. He would rather have the freedom to put out music his way rather than be huge. I believe that is why after 13 years and 20 releases, the tank is still rolling....

Band lineup: Jason Martin (guitar/vocals), Josh Dooley (guitar), Trey Many (drums).

all pictures taken by Melanie M.

Other Desert Cities - On The Verge of Collapsing

Label: Velvet Blue Music
Release date: August 8th, 2006
mp3: Winter Winds

Next time you go driving cross-country, make sure you bring a road map, a thermos full of coffee, and of course Other Desert Cities. These are perfect tunes to crank up when driving through the open space of the midwest and the lonely desert towns of New Mexico (or wherever). It's been four years since the ODC self-titled debut and fans have been waiting....and waiting....and waiting... for this sophomore release. So what's the verdict? Was it worth the wait?

I would gladly wait four years for every new release if it was as pleasing as On The Verge of Collapsing. The word on the street is that frontman C. Charles Bowden was going through a divorce during the making of this record. The expectation would be that the lyrics would be dripping with self-pity, regret, vitriol, disdain, depression, loneliness, and revenge. Some of that is here, but this is by no means a self-important, self-centered, egotistical Bowden portrait. Instead, the album effectively expresses loss but not at the expense of faith and hope.

Track 3 "These Things Happen" will surely tug at your heart because it's about a phone call to a man informing him that his wife died in a car crash. The gentle strumming of the guitar along with the introduction of a saxophone drives the song forward as it explodes into the powerful chorus of :

Oh my God she's dead...I just spoke with her! This can't be her end...I just spoke with her!

There are some tender songs as well, including the opener "On Time", "Darlin' Come Home", "Walk With Me", and the very uplifting closer "Heaven Bound Train".

"Heavy Waters" features some of the "fuzzy noise" fans would recognize from Bowden's old band The Merbabies. The song has an extended space-rockish ending that will surely get your attention.

On "Winter Winds", Bowden reverts to the sound that made the self-titled debut such a success. It's more of a simple "cowboy ballad" complete with a little twang and violin. To me, this is the signature sound of ODC and exactly what you should be playing on the long road trips.

"Trouble" is a Cat Stevens cover and might be the favorite for many people. Bowden does an admirable job of making this song his own, adding his personal touch and emotion to the chorus.

I think it's very revealing that "Heaven Bound Train" was chosen as the closer on an album that could have very easily been one to make you jump in front of a speeding bus. Instead, the closing track takes the listener on a different road - one that leads to hope and is driven by faith. This song is totally reminiscent of Wilco's "Forget The Flowers" on the Being There album.

On The Verge of Collapsing has enough sorrow and swagger to make even Tweedy and Dylan proud (and Cat Stevens, too). This is an album that you can hold onto in times of despair and in turn it will hold you up. Bowden's storytelling is at it's most honest and transparent while the music ventures into both familiar and foreign territory. It all adds up to repeated spins and a CD that might not find its way back into the jewel case for a long, long time.

The Dark Romantics - Another Song [EP]

Label: Lujo
Release date: August 8th, 2006
mp3: Another Song For Another Night

Every once in a while a CD comes around that gets you excited about music again. I can say with certainty that The Dark Romantics will rock your ass off. It's the kind of music that should be blasting from your car stereo with the windows all the way down.

This 5 song ep was produced by Jason Martin (Starflyer 59) and is essentially a "teaser" for the full-length album that is coming later this year. Jason Martin's name should get indie rocksters' attention right away.

Need More? Frontman Eric Collins (Denison Marrs/The Party People) has joined forces with Dean Paul (John Ralston Band) to form The Dark Romantics. Oh yeah, I failed to mention that both of their wives (who happen to be sisters!) are in the band as well (Amanda and Carla Jones).

The Dark Romantics is Denison Marrs "on the rocks" with two shots of bourbon (which means it's nothing like Denison Marrs at all). This "teaser" runs at just under 16 minutes so it's enough to give you a buzz, but will undoubtedly leave you salivating for the forthcoming full-length "Midnight Kissing". These jams are darker, sexier, and dirtier, with bluesy riffs that will drag your ass out of your chair and make you dance (and I don't dance).

The EP opens with the title track "Another Song For Another Night" and it features ear-catching guitar lines and a chorus that will have you singing. There's absolutely no drop-off on track 2 "So Confused and We Like It" which lures you in with lyrics like, "You look even better than my dream last night". Again, it's tough to keep yourself from singing along.

Track 3 "When She says...She Loves You" slows the pace a bit, but is just as pleasing with synths and other random sounds introduced. Track 4 "Mode 59" is the most interesting song of the 5. The guitars just so happen to remind me of a Starflyer 59 song. The first time I played the CD, my wife walked over and said to me "This is a really cool sounding song." Well, she's right. I'll just add the fact that this is the most experimental song on the CD as it slightly departs from the dirty "straight-up rock the hell out of you" recipe of the opening tracks. The CD closes with The Dark Romantics Remix of "So Confused" which slows down the original a bit and throws in some synths for good measure.

These 5 songs will serve as a suitable summer soundtrack for those hot and humid evenings sitting on your front porch while sipping your favorite drink. Yes, some people may check out The Dark Romantics because Jason Martin is producing or because they like Denison Marrs. But once they listen to this EP, they will keep listening (over and over) based solely on the merits of The Dark Romantics. I can almost guarantee that fans of Denison Marrs and The Party People will be hooked on The Dark Romantics...or perhaps like it better in some ways.

Gary Murray "Queen of the Freight Train" mp3

Gary Murray's (formerly LN) first solo release Revenent Waltz EP is coming soon from Velvet Blue Music. It was originally planned as a full-length, but Gary Murray decided to take the best and make a mind-blowing ep instead. If the demos are any indication of what the EP will be like, I'd say plan on buying it. Here's one of them for your mp3 listening pleasure, "Queen of the Freight Train". While LN was known for lush and dreamy arrangements, you'll notice the Gary Murray solo material has a distinct "folk" sound that could be described as "cowboy" ballads.

I believe this is my favorite song that Gary Murray has ever written and it's only a rough mix. I want to thank Frank for agreeing to do this interview. He's a stand-up guy for answering all these questions.

PLUGGED: You worked on numerous Velvet Blue Music releases as well as playing in both starflyer 59 and Headphones (with David Bazan). Why did you stop?

Frank Lenz: I left my wife in 2005 and had a nervous break down. I lied to Jason and Dave about why I couldn't be on tour and understandably so I no longer play with them. As far as VBM goes I can only guess so I won't. There are a lot of people I hurt during that time so my answers might be abrupt.

PLUGGED: Where can people purchase Conquest Slaughter?

FL: I think Hidden Agenda has a few copies.

PLUGGED: Your latest record VileLenz and Thieves contains some pretty dark themes and the lyrics are very intriguing. In what way was this a very personal album for you?

FL: I've done some shitty things in my life but none worse than what I did to my ex-wife. That record was written during that time so the result is as it is.

PLUGGED: On VileLenz and Thieves, there's a song that has the line "Conquest Slaughter, moron fodder" Could you explain what this particular line means to you?

FL: I think that record's a pile of shit. When I made it I was excited... it seemed like a logical next step but turned out (to me) to sound confusing, derivitive and phony. I wanted to be heard more than I had to say, I wasn't ready. That being said, as of late, I've come to think track 1 and track 4 are alright.

PLUGGED: Which Frank Lenz album are you most proud of and why?

FL: None .

PLUGGED: In your opinion, what's the best song you have ever written?

FL: I think I'm writing better things now but that remains to be discovered. I'm excited at the moment about the new tunes I'm writing. I'm trying to make steps to bridge the gap between self expression and musicality.

PLUGGED: Can you describe what the next Frank Lenz record will be like and who will play on it?

FL: I want to work with Blake Westcott. I hope it will work out because he is very good. I pretty much play everything on everything and that's getting old, plus it doesn't sound so good so here's to change.

PLUGGED: I just listened to Last Temptation of Frank Lenz today and I think it has some of my most favorite songs that you have written. Now that you are working with Hidden Agenda Records (Parasol), would you like to see it given a proper release?

FL: Thank you. Although I like a few songs on that record I would rather it not be released. It's not bad, it's just not me.

PLUGGED: Are you still producing? If yes, what are you working on?

FL: I helped a guy out named Jared Colinger...super cool guy and [ I ] worked with a song writer named amy cooper, you should check her out. She is also a great woman and a good friend. I should also mention a band called blvd. I produced their record and didn't come close to doing them justice. Good fucking rock band.

PLUGGED: You and Richard Swift used to do a lot of work together. Do you hope to work with him on anything again?

FL: No.

PLUGGED: Do you have plans to go on tour and play your solo material?

FL: I'd love to. No one asks and I don't have any idea how to book myself so if anyone wants an opening asshole I'm available.

PLUGGED:Tell us something that you want everyone to know about Frank Lenz.

FL: I may be full of shit but at least now I'll let you know up front.

PLUGGED: Thank you, Frank.
